Don’t Drink the EHR Kool-Aid

The Obama administration needs you to believe a lie. They have already spent nearly $25 billion of the $36 billion in taxpayer dollars allotted to move Americans from the security of paper medical records to the insecurity and government surveillance and intrusions of interoperable electronic health records (EHRs).

But you, the American patient, are not yet convinced the government EHR is a good idea. And news reports of major data breaches – 39 million patients affected –  rightly worries you.

But they need you to view government EHRs as your best friend rather than the tool of your worst enemy.

So they plan to trick you. This week is a good example of their strategy. First, they declared it “National Health IT Week.” Then on Monday, the federal government hosted a “Consumer Health IT Summit.” Karen DeSalvo, the National Coordinator for Health IT, focused on how EHRs could make patient data accessible to patients “when and where they need it.”

This is their strategy. She needs you to need the government EHR system. It would scare you to learn about the 2.2 million entities given access to your medical records through the HIPAA “privacy” rule and the HITECH Act, so she’s silent as a mouse on that fact. Instead, she wants to convince you that online access to your health data is so important that you will not let it be taken away.

Money is being used to coerce your trusted doctors into helping you be convinced. Physicians will be financially penalized under Obama’s “meaningful use” regulations unless at least 5% of all their patients “view, download, or transmit to a third party their health information.”

They need your buy-in because without your data -- computerized, online and accessible -- the Obamacare “death panels” (PCORI & IPAB) cannot conduct research to rationalize rationing.  As former HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced in a press release:

“Health IT is the foundation for a truly 21st century health system where we pay for the right care, not just more care.”

Notice how they will decide “right care.” At a PoliticoPro briefing I attended last week in D.C., one of the panelists, John Colmers of Johns Hopkins Medicine, openly said the electronic health record is the only tool left to contain health care costs.

Don’t take the bait. Don’t buy the lie. They need you as dependent on the government EHR system as you are on your smartphone. Refuse to comply with your physician’s request that you view, download or transmit. Just say no.

The mandated government EHR is Obama’s tool of control. It shifts control from you to the government. Federal access to all your private data -- personal, physical, behavioral, family, emotional and genetic -- will be used to profile you and your family, control your doctors and restrict your access to personalized care.

Don’t drink the EHR Kool-Aid. Your life may depend on it.
